What is Botox®

Botox® is a medication that is injected into facial muscles and has been approved by the FDA for over 30 years. Botox® is currently the only FSA approved treatment for temporary cosmetic treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. The benefits of Botox® go beyond reducing appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Based on your specific needs, we may suggest Botox® to reduce migraine headaches, lessen excessive sweating, or treat a TMJ disorder.

How does it work?

The human face typically has over 40 muscles and overtime, many of these muscles cause wrinkle lines. Botox®, through a process called cosmetic denervation temporarily blocks some of the transmitters in those muscles. By blocking these transmitters, this means that those tiny muscles temporarily will not contract to wrinkle your face. The entire process is practically painless. The tiny needly may cause a small stinging sensation when the injection is made.

Why see an Oral Surgeon for Botox®?

When deciding who to visit for cosmetic procedures, many people narrow their search to only cosmetic surgeons.  Choosing an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon means you can be assured that they have speciality training and extensive knowledge of the facial muscles, facial structure, and teeth to assure the best possible results. Thanks to their surgical background, oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) are uniquely qualified to perform cosmetic procedures involving the functional and aesthetic aspects of the face, mouth, teeth and jaws. Extensive education and training in surgical procedures involving skin, muscle, bone and cartilage finely attune the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to the need for harmony between facial appearance and function.
